Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative side in her early years due to her aunt Denise. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, allowed her to study literature for art as well as theatre in daylight. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized that art could be a powerful tool to promote the cause of activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who had a social conscience and encouraged DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay was brought up in Compton by her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has been for generations. DuVernay's dad recalled the civil rights marches on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Alabama's Selma would influence her later on to create a film about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. In 1990, she was a graduate of the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood CA. DuVernay began to produce for broadcast journalism while she was in her the college. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given the responsibility of looking over the residence and scrutinizing the trash of one of members of the jury. The duties she was required to accomplish left her unsatisfied and, following her decision not to pursue a career in journalism, she moved on to the world of publicity. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist in a small production studio right out of school. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Alongside PR, the agency has created lifestyle networks and promotional campaigns, such as The Urban Beauty Collective.
